Principal Message: What Works in Schools?
In the October newsletter, I stated my monthly principal message will highlight proven
factors that exist in high performing schools. As such, I will use this platform to share
research on what effective schools do well. Simply, what works in schools? The source
of this research comes from “What Works in Schools: Translating Research into Action”
by Robert Marzano.
Marzano’s work indicates three main factors that support strong academic outcomes
and positive culture. The factors are found at the school level, teacher level and student
level. Last month, I shared one school level factor is to have strong parent and
community involvement. We just completed a successful round of student-parent-
teacher conferences and continue to use parent square as our primary resource for
communication. Our elementary PTO provides great financial support and activities to
connect students and families to our school. Additionally, our school district boasts
nearly 100 partnerships in and around our community.
The next critical school level factor is providing students with a safe and orderly
learning environment. As the Principal, I take this factor very personally. Students can’t
learn and teachers can’t teach if the building/classroom is chaotic and disruptive. To
support our environment, we have many systems in place. For example;
An organized building wide schedule.
Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports. We have core values. Daily we
teach these values and behavior expectations.
Monday Manners—Weekly we identify and promote a manner. (Please and thank
you)
Bullying prevention curriculum and lessons.
Vigilant and dedicated staff who report concerns.
We celebrate our successes! Approximately once a month we have an all-school
assembly highlighting achievement, growth, and talent.
Do we (and every other school) have challenges related to this factor? Yes. Are we
perfect, No. I and others strongly believe we work hard every day to address conflict
and respond to teachable moments. These moments help form happy, healthy,
respectful and responsible adults.
