I want to take a moment to acknowledge the failed operational referendum and the impacts of reducing the district's budget by approximately 4 million dollars for the 2026-27 school year will have on the high school.
At the board meeting on Thursday, April 9th, the following high school positions were preliminarily approved to be reduced/eliminated beginning for the 2026-27 school year:
- .6 HS Math position eliminated and AVID programming reduced
- 1.0 Alternative Education position eliminated
- Study hall para professional and district-wide copying position eliminated
- 1.0 HS/MS Spanish/AVID position eliminated
- 1.0 HS Computer Science Position (currently vacant)
- 1.0 HS Transition Coordinator (currently vacant)
- Reduce HS Art staff from 1.0 to 6 translating to reducing art courses from 12 to 9 p/ year
The staffing reductions are not a reflection of the value, talent, or commitment of the individuals who may be affected. They reflect the financial constraints we are navigating as a result of the failed operational referendum.
In addition, other impacts include a district-wide salary freeze and reduction of building and department budgets. Additional positions are being eliminated or reduced at each building to total a reduction of approx. 24 staff members.
This large reduction in staffing creates uncertainty for everyone, including those who may be directly impacted and those who will remain. In addition, students may have questions regarding their classes for next year. Beginning next week, we will begin to create the matrix schedule for next year now that we have our budget numbers for next year. We will communicate updates regarding next year's schedule and course offerings as we adjust accordingly.
Lastly, as a school and community, even in challenging moments, we lead and move forward. Our students and community look to us to provide a high-quality education, even with the reduction of 4 million to our budget next year. We are dedicated, resilient, and deeply committed to students and education.
Respectfully,
Stacey Kuehn
